MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS IN ETHIOPIA

In July 2006, Ed Sider and Michael Alemu had the opportunity to visit and witness the progress of the projects Christian Horizons and cooperating partner, Children’s Homes International (childrenshomesint.org) have initiated since 2005 in Ethiopia. There were four main project areas that were looked at: Training for Special Needs Teachers; School Construction; Vocational Training; and Camp/Training.

There is much to be excited about as we anticipate that within the next two years, 7000 children with special needs will receive access to proper education! The realization of this goal will only become a reality as teachers begin to be trained and school renovation and construction projects are initiated. Currently, we are helping to support 28 teachers undergo a 10 month government approved certificate level program in special education. Upon graduation, the teachers will work in five districts reaching out to approximately 700 students with exceptional needs.

As children learn new skills and develop their potential, they become more able to take an active role in the community, secure employment and become contributors to the economy. The results lead to a stronger and more vibrant workforce that contributes to the reduction of poverty in this nation.

Christian Horizons is also assisting in the construction of a multi-purpose building to serve as a camp, training and conference center. This center will strengthen our capacity to reach out to thousands of individuals with exceptional needs in a nation where only 2% have access to services.
