Did YOU Party at the Picnic?

Party at the Picnic On Saturday, July 28, 2007, over 400 people gathered at Bruce Mills Conservation area for a day of carnival activities, concerts, delicious BBQ food, and fellowship! The beautiful, sunny weather made a good day GREAT. The entertainment stage rocked all day with performances by Vessels of Honour, From the Top, O’Neil Watson, and the TC3 Drummers. Children enjoyed the balloon animals and entertainment provided by Papa the Clown and Dan Ryan (in between visits to the face painting, bouncy castle and popcorn stations!) It was wonderful to see the people we support and their families enjoying a celebration together with staff members and their families.

A brave soul in the dunk tank, raising funds for Ethiopia! Dwayne? Paul? Olive?

A great day to meet and visit with friends and family...
A team of over 50 volunteers made this day possible. THANK YOU for your willingness to serve – we hope you had an amazing time. We praise God for the funds raised for Horizon House Ethiopia through ticket sales (thank you to Dwayne, Paul, and the other courageous souls who braved the ice-cold dunk tank water), donations and CD sales – over $600.00!

Not only that, but three children were sponsored through Christian Horizons child sponsorship program!

We have received some very positive feedback from staff, families and the people we support.

One family said, “We just wanted to say thank-you for providing such a great picnic - it was really great. We were very impressed by the devotion of the staff toward the people supported and how conscientious they were about their duties. We also realize the amount of planning that had to go into such a day.

Thanks to all those who did so much work and may God have the Glory.” Amen! See you all at the Picnic in 2008!

Humber College Partnership

Recently we had the opportunity to run a pilot project with Humber College in the area of continuing education of staff of Christian Horizons in the GTA. We were able to negotiate having a Humber teacher provide “on site” education for a postgraduate certification course. The name is Certificate Program in Advanced Client-Directed Case Management. Having the course “on site” at our Deerhide location enabled us to secure a discount for each staff participating. In order to graduate with the certificate participants are required to gain 5 credits; four are compulsory and one elective.
The compulsory courses are:

  • Philosophy and Values of Case Management
  • Legal and Ethical Issues in Case Management Practices
  • Client Directed Case Management-Introduction
  • Client Directed Case Management-Advanced.

The elective choices will be:

  • Systemic Issues in Case Management Practice
  • Client-Directed Case Management in Community Mental Health
  • Families as Case Managers.

A simple survey was given to each Program Manager on Thursday May 3rd with a request it be posted in programs for staff feedback. What we were looking for was a sense of a greater interest in such a course and what time frames suit most people so we could offer this certification course to more staff. The date for Program Managers to get this information to get back to Irene Moore was May 23rd. All registrations have now been received from Program Managers and staff, and the course is full.

The current class make up is both program managers and front line staff from Central and North Districts. The leadership in Central District wanted to provide the opportunity for continuing education at times not usually offered at night school. Each participant attends on their own time and is responsible for the costs of the course.
