Robert's Talk

Robert's Talk

In the spring of 2018 there was a great opportunity to hear a speaker sharing about his experiences in high school, and how he overcame some of the obstacles to belonging in his life. On Wednesday May 9th Robert Slater was asked to share at Brampton Christian School, located at 12480 Hutchinson Farm Ln, Caledon.

The school invited Robert to share some of his personal story and perspective as it related to their annual chapel theme of “Speak Life.” The school was focusing on Proverbs 18:21, recognizing that “The tongue has the power of life and death…” and that every day we can choose to speak life to those around us.

Robert spent time preparing his thoughts and working together with Jennifer Polley from Peel Community Participation Supports. Robert shared beautifully and from the heart. Robert’s talk touched on issues like accepting yourself, and accepting others, and being yourself; even when others don’t accept you. Robert also shared about his personal goals, like having a job, he was able to give the students a glimpse into what it is like trying to navigate high school for someone who experiences a disability. After his talk Robert took some questions from the students, and it was easy to see that he had already built some connections through his honesty, and openness, as well as his love of technology and video games!

Bev Farrow, a member of the faculty at Brampton Christian School, helped to facilitate this opportunity. As a follow-up she also coordinated a student giving project that saw the student leadership at the school collect a generous donation of various items from crafting supplies, and board games to musical instruments, including an acoustic guitar!

On May 30th a group of approximately 30 people who attend Peel CPS joined the students at Brampton Christian School for their year-end chapel. There were performances by the school band, and the drama club. The highlight was the school presenting their donation to the Peel Community Participation Support program. The donation has since been put to good use, and added value to opportunities at Peel CPS.

We are so grateful for the donation from Brampton Christian School, but we are even more excited to see the partnership between CH and BCS grow as we build communities of belonging through future opportunities to work together.

Congratulations to Robert! You have an amazing ability to share openly about success and challenges in your own life, and help others to see from someone else’s point of view! Thank-you for sharing your gifts! If you are still looking for a job, I think “Public Speaker” or “Author” should be added to the list of possibilities!
