Haiti

Christian Horizons Global has been working in Haiti since 2009, serving individuals with exceptional needs, including orphans with physical and intellectual disabilities, the unemployed and those affected by the devastating 2010 earthquake. The destructive impact of the earthquake and subsequent hurricanes has created an atmosphere of despair. The need to empower the people of Haiti, re-establish dignity and assist with development projects is great.

In Haiti, we have a longstanding and valuable relationship with an international church denomination. Through this partnership and the support of generous donors, Christian Horizons Global has established opportunities for education, spiritual leadership, special needs programs, micro-enterprise projects and a child sponsorship program that currently supports 310 children. We are currently impacting seven communities by strengthening opportunities for development in a fragile country.

We have two types of micro-enterprise programs in Haiti. Water depots in Canaan, Sibert and Arcahaie are meeting the need for fresh water and providing an income for workers. Secondly, a Salt Harvest project begun in Gonaives in 2010. Donors provided the investment needed to purchase land to dig salt basins. The harvesting process is labor-intensive but the business operation helps provide local jobs in a community struggling with an unemployment rate of approximately 90%. The process involves manual digging of basins, allowing salt to crystallize, harvest and sale of salt to a local commercial enterprise.
